Portuguese Wine Regions

Portugal is one of the world's oldest wine-producing countries, with a winemaking history spanning over 4,000 years. The country features 14 official wine regions (DOC areas), each producing distinctive wines influenced by unique terroirs, indigenous grape varieties, and centuries of tradition.

Major Wine Regions

Douro Valley (DOC)

UNESCO World Heritage region, birthplace of Port wine. Also produces excellent unfortified reds and whites from indigenous grapes like Touriga Nacional.

Alentejo (DOC)

Portugal's largest wine region, known for rich, full-bodied red wines. Hot, dry climate produces powerful wines from local and international varieties.

Vinho Verde (DOC)

Northwestern region famous for light, fresh, slightly fizzy white wines. Perfect for summer drinking.

Dão (DOC)

Central mountain region producing elegant, complex reds from Touriga Nacional and fresh whites from Encruzado.

Bairrada (DOC)

Known for powerful red wines from Baga grape and excellent sparkling wines.

Lisboa (DOC)

Diverse region near the capital with several sub-regions producing a wide variety of wines.
