Surfing in Portugal
Portugal has earned its reputation as Europe's premier surfing destination with over 800km of Atlantic coastline, consistent swells year-round, and diverse breaks for all skill levels. Ericeira is one of only two World Surfing Reserves in Europe, while Nazare holds the record for the largest wave ever surfed.
Nazare - Big Wave Capital
Nazare has become synonymous with big wave surfing after Sebastian Steudtner's record-breaking 86-foot wave:
Praia do Norte
The world's most famous big wave spot. The underwater Nazare Canyon creates massive waves reaching up to 30 meters during winter swells. Only for professional big wave surfers.
Praia da Nazare (South Beach)
More sheltered beach break suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers when conditions are smaller.
Peniche - Surfing Hub
Peniche peninsula offers waves for all levels with breaks on both sides depending on conditions:
Supertubos
World-class beach break hosting WSL Championship Tour events. Powerful, hollow waves for experienced surfers. Best at mid-tide with northwest swells.
Baleal
Ideal for beginners with multiple surf schools, gentle waves, and sheltered spots on both sides of the isthmus.
Molho Leste
Protected harbor break perfect for beginners, consistent small waves.
Consolacao

Europe's first World Surfing Reserve with 7 quality surf breaks within 4km:
Ribeira d'Ilhas

Foz do Lizandro
Beginner-friendly river mouth beach break with surf schools and consistent small waves.
Praia dos Pescadores
Sheltered town beach, good for beginners when other spots are too big.
