Driving in Portugal
Portugal has an excellent modern road network with well-maintained highways connecting all major cities and regions. The motorway system (autoestradas) makes traveling across the country quick and efficient, though most are toll roads.
Main Motorways (Autoestradas)
A1 - Lisbon to Porto
Portugal's main north-south highway connecting Lisbon and Porto (300 km, ~3 hours). Passes through Coimbra and Leiria. Toll cost approximately 22 EUR.
A2 - Lisbon to Algarve
Main route from Lisbon to the Algarve (280 km to Faro, ~2.5 hours). Connects to A22 along the Algarve coast. Toll cost approximately 22 EUR.
A22 - Via do Infante (Algarve)
East-west highway across the Algarve from Lagos to the Spanish border. Electronic toll only - no toll booths.
A3 - Porto to Spanish Border
Connects Porto to Valenca and Spain via Braga (120 km). Important route to Galicia.
A4 - Porto to Braganca
East-west highway from Porto to the northeastern border region (200 km). Access to Douro Valley.
A5 - Lisbon to Cascais
Coastal highway connecting Lisbon to Cascais and Estoril (25 km). Toll-free.
A6 - Lisbon to Spanish Border
Main route from Lisbon to Spain via Evora and Badajoz (200 km). Access to Alentejo.
A8 - Lisbon to Leiria
Coastal route north of Lisbon to Leiria (120 km). Access to Silver Coast beaches.

Via Verde
Electronic toll device for Portuguese residents. Green lanes at toll booths for quick passage.
EASYtoll
For rental cars - register your credit card at toll booths when entering Portugal. Charges applied automatically.
TOLLcard / TOLLservice
Prepaid cards available at post offices and petrol stations. Load credit and use on electronic-only toll roads.
Manual Payment
Cash or credit card at attended toll booths. Not available on electronic-only roads (SCUTs).

Driving Tips
- Documents: Carry driving license, ID/passport, and insurance documents
- Right-hand side: Drive on the right, overtake on the left
- Roundabouts: Give way to traffic already on the roundabout
- Seatbelts: Mandatory for all passengers
- Mobile phones: Hands-free only while driving
- Alcohol limit: 0.5 g/l (0.2 g/l for new drivers)
- Fuel: Unleaded (gasolina), diesel (gasoleo). Most stations accept cards.
