Portugal's Railway Network

Portugal's railway network is operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP), the national railway company. The network connects all major cities on the mainland, from Porto in the north to Faro in the Algarve, with Lisbon as the central hub. Train travel is one of the most comfortable and scenic ways to explore Portugal.

Train Types

Alfa Pendular (AP)

Portugal's fastest train, reaching 220 km/h. Runs between Braga/Porto and Faro via Lisbon. First and second class with Wi-Fi, bar car, and power outlets.

Intercidades (IC)

Long-distance express trains serving major routes. Comfortable seating with first and second class options. Slightly slower but more frequent than Alfa Pendular.

InterRegional (IR)

Medium-distance trains connecting regional centers. Good for reaching smaller cities not served by faster services.

Regional (R)

Local stopping trains serving smaller towns and rural areas. Perfect for scenic journeys like the Douro Valley line.

Urbanos

Suburban commuter trains serving the Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra metropolitan areas. Frequent services at affordable prices.

Major Railway Routes

Linha do Norte (Lisbon – Porto)

Portugal's most important railway line, connecting the two largest cities. The Alfa Pendular covers the 336 km journey in approximately 2 hours 40 minutes. Trains depart frequently throughout the day from Lisboa Santa Apolonia and Lisboa Oriente stations to Porto Campanha.

Linha do Sul (Lisbon – Faro/Algarve)

Connects the capital to the Algarve coast via Setúbal, Beja, and Tunes junction. The Alfa Pendular takes around 2 hours 45 minutes from Lisbon to Faro. From Tunes, branch lines serve Lagos and other Algarve towns along the coast.

Linha da Beira Baixa

A scenic route through central Portugal, connecting Lisbon (via Entroncamento) to Guarda and the Spanish border. Passes through Castelo Branco and the Serra da Estrela foothills. Mostly served by InterRegional and Regional trains.

Linha do Douro (Porto – Pocinho)

One of Europe's most scenic railway journeys, following the Douro River through terraced vineyards and dramatic gorges. The line runs from Porto São Bento to Pocinho, passing through Peso da Régua and Pinhão. A must-do experience for any visitor to Portugal.

Additional important lines include the Linha do Minho (Porto to Viana do Castelo and the Spanish border), the Linha da Beira Alta (connecting to Spain via Vilar Formoso), and the Algarve Line running along the southern coast from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António.

Travel Tips

  • Book in advance: Promo tickets are available 5–60 days before departure at significant discounts, especially for Alfa Pendular
  • Classes: First class (Conforto) offers wider seats, more legroom, and quieter carriages. Second class (Turística) is comfortable and good value
  • Lisbon stations: Santa Apolónia (historic terminal), Oriente (modern hub near Parque das Nações), and Entrecampos serve different routes
  • Porto stations: Campanhã is the main station for long-distance trains. São Bento (with famous azulejo tiles) serves regional and Douro Valley trains
  • Passes: The Inlandsbane Portugal Pass offers unlimited regional train travel for 3, 5, or 7 consecutive days
