About the Azores
The Azores is a Portuguese archipelago composed of nine volcanic islands situated in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 1,500 km west of Lisbon. Known for dramatic volcanic landscapes, crater lakes, hot springs, and some of the world's best whale watching, the Azores offer an unspoiled natural paradise.
The Nine Islands
The Azores are divided into three groups:
Eastern Group
- São Miguel - Largest island, home to Ponta Delgada and famous Sete Cidades crater lake
- Santa Maria - Warmest island with beautiful beaches
Central Group
- Terceira - UNESCO World Heritage city of Angra do Heroísmo
- Pico - Portugal's highest mountain and UNESCO vineyards
- Faial - "Blue Island" with Capelinhos volcano
- São Jorge - Long narrow island famous for cheese
- Graciosa - Peaceful island with sulfur cave
Western Group

Getting to the Azores
The main airport is Ponta Delgada (PDL) on São Miguel, with direct flights from mainland Portugal, other European cities, and North America. Inter-island flights and ferries connect the nine islands.
